TRADITIONAL DRESS OF MISING PEOPLE
The Mishing (or Mishing/Miri) tribe of Assam, India, has a rich cultural heritage, including distinctive traditional attire. Their clothing is vibrant and woven with intricate designs, reflecting their identity and traditions.
Traditional Dress of Mishing Tribe:
For Women ( Mimbir koneng , Neng Tani ) :
1. Gero – A red and black-striped wraparound skirt, usually paired with a blouse. Gero is believe to be wore in occasions like " Ui "(spiritual ceremony )and Gumrag Soman (Gumrag Dance) by the women .
2. Ribi Gaseng – A long, decorative woven cloth draped over the shoulder, showcasing intricate patterns and vibrant colors.
3. Ege – A handwoven skirt similar to a mekhela, wrapped around the lower body.
4. Seleng Gasor – A full-body wrap used on special occasions, particularly during cultural festivals.
5. Accessories – Women wear silver jewelry, bead necklaces, and sometimes nose rings.
For men (Yame , Ko tani) :
1. Gonro Ugon – A handwoven loincloth or dhoti. Which is White and pale gray in colour. Quit distinct from Assamese Dhoti .
2. Mibu Galuk – A sleeveless cotton jacket (Half Tshirt) , sometimes with embroidery. Also similar with traditional t-shirt of Adi Tribe. Mibu Galuk is very common in Black, Green , Red,White and Golden colours.
3. Gaseng – A decorative shoulder cloth. It's a significant tradition among Mishing . Both Women and men prefer to wear . Gaseng was earlier usually wore by old elders .
4. Erkog (Érkog) - A Unique and iconic colorful shawls. From 1.6 - 2.0 meter long . Made with Red, black and white colour. Also wear during winter season.
4. Headgear – During special occasions, men wear a turban or head wrap.
Occasions and Significance:
Mishing people wear these traditional outfits during their major festival, Ali Ai Ligang, which marks the beginning of the agricultural season.
The dresses are usually woven by women using handlooms, with traditional motifs that have been passed down through generations.
